6 Tips to Make a Good First Impression in Court
There are many ways to make a good first impression in court. You may be nervous when you get into the courtroom, but these six tips will help ease any anxiety about how it’s going to go.
Know the judge
Judges have a particular mode of operation that you need to consider when working with them. If you’ve never been in their courtroom before, make sure to do your research on them prior to the first court date.
Be organized with your paperwork
Organize your paperwork in a way that will allow you to present it quickly and efficiently.
Going paperless is a best practice these days! It’s time-consuming to scan all of your papers, but it will be well worth it when you’re able to access them at the touch of a button.
When you’re going to appear in a courtroom, dress nicely but avoid wearing too formal of clothing such as suits since judges prefer if people show up looking professional yet relaxed.
Don’t be caught wearing something informal like denim or slides because it comes off poorly when meeting with the judge presiding over your case.
Stay calm in front of the jury
In order to make a good first impression in court, stay calm. Don’t raise your voice or show anger because you will come across as too emotional and less professional.
Keep eye contact with the jury
Making eye contact with jurors is very important as it shows that you are confident and trustworthy. Even if the judge says something that doesn’t make sense, don’t disagree with it unless she or he asks for input from your side of the courtroom
Don’t be late to court
Apologize if you’re late to court, but explain why if possible, as soon as you sit down in front of the jury.
